Why is it important for me to join?

AOSA represents 6,300 students from all 23 schools and colleges of optometry, and strength in numbers establishes credibility. AOSA is the national student affiliate of the AOA. When you become a member of AOSA, you automatically become a member of the AOA as well. AOA is the voice of optometry as a whole and speaks as your advocate before the government. Optometry is a legislated profession and both AOSA and AOA work hard to protect and expand the scope of practice to ensure you can utilize all of the tools you learned in school to the fullest extent possible when you graduate and start practicing.

The AOSA is the largest affiliate of the American Optometric Association.  AOSA is also the liaison between students of optometry and other affiliated national optometric organizations including: The National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO), the Association of Regulatory Boards of Optometry (ARBO), the Armed Forces Optometric Society (AFOS), the American Optometric Association Political Action Committee (AOA-PAC), the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (COVD), the American Public Health Association (APHA), the AOA’s Federal Relations Committee (FRC), the Optometric Extension Program Foundation (OEPF), the American Academy of Optometry (AAO), and the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO).

Sustaining Membership — Show your support and build for the future!

At Optometry’s Meeting, the AOSA relaunched the Sustaining Membership program with style, as dozens of students clad in AOSA green demonstrated the new online Sustaining Membership application and talked about the benefits of supporting AOSA, even long after one has graduated and moved on to practice. More than 100 optometrists and friends of optometry signed up on the spot!

Benefits include getting your name in AOSA’s magazine, Foresight, and keeping updated on the latest AOSA activities, as well as a membership certificate and at the $100 level a copy of “Borish”, the biography of optometry’s “architect,” by William Baldwin.  More important, you become a part of AOSA’s work to fund travel grants to attend Optometry’s Meeting and AOA’s Congressional Conference, offer educational and practical benefits to current students, and AOSA’s investment in a strong, united profession. With 93 percent of optometry students belonging to the AOSA, the organization is THE voice for optometry students and optometry’s future.

Joining is simple, thanks to AOSA’s online application and payment link.

Individuals wishing to give at a higher level may want to consider the platinum level.
